Read Your Life Away

A new year has arrived. With all new Januarys I set my reading goal for the year on my goodreads page. In 2019 I am aspiring to read 30 books. I’m a fortunate fellow with a home full of books because of my father’s love of them along with my love as well. In 2018 my book goal was 30 and I finished at 41.

What is it I like to read? Honestly, I’m a fan of all sorts of different stories. Young adult literature is some of the finest writing I’ve discovered. These stories tackle the tough stuff of growing up. I enjoy inspirational books from theology to overcoming mental health issues. I like graphic novels. A good kids book can make me smile and lighten my heart. Love stories that end happily ever after give me hope. What I enjoy reading is as eclectic as life itself.

I developed my love of reading for fun and by choice a little later than many book enthusiasts. I was 19 and a Freshman in college when I committed myself to reading a book and then immediately starting another. The right books at the right time have greatly enriched my life while saving me from past mistakes and much sorrow. A joyful life is the life for me. Pleasure and knowledge are in books if one only has the courage to open them up and dedicate their time to that which some are too busy to bother with.

My favorite novel from 2018 was How to Stop Time by Matt Haig. I won’t give away spoilers, but I thoroughly enjoyed that one. My favorite young adult novel was Turtles All the Way Down by John Green. And my favorite book of short stories was Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks. I enjoyed all of my 2018 reading, but these are a few that made an awesome impression.

Happy reading in 2019. If you have a book recommendation I’d be thrilled to hear about it. Cheers to now and to this new year!
